A Strategy for Success

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • How quickly do you respond to enquiries?

We aim to get back to you within 24 hours of receiving your enquiry (working hours, Monday to Friday).

  • How long does the admissions process take?

From the moment you get in touch with us to the offer of a place, our admissions process typically takes 2 weeks. Each student’s application journey is different, however, so please get in touch with our friendly team to find out more.

  • Will I need to sit an entrance exam?

Yes, all prospective students are asked to sit admissions tests before they join us. The type of assessment you’ll take depends on the year group you’re joining.

    •  Years 9 and 10: online aptitude test and English assessment.
    • Year 11: online aptitude test and maths and combined science papers.
    • Year 12: online aptitude test plus assessments in maths, physics, biology, and chemistry.

Successful applicants will then be invited to an online or in-person interview.

  • Can I transfer to OIC Brighton from another school?

Yes, of course. Many students join us from other schools. They do so for a variety of reasons, whether it’s looking for higher levels of academic challenge and support, a more progressive approach, or the chance to live and study on an inspiring single-site campus.

  • Is the college open to students of all nationalities?

Yes! We’re proud to be a truly international school that’s home to students from more than 20 countries. Living and learning here, you’ll study alongside some of the brightest young minds in the world, bonding over shared passions and goals, and creating memories and connections that last a lifetime.

  • Do your students wear a uniform?

In Years 9, 10, and 11, our students wear a casual uniform comprising polo shirts, chinos or a skirt, a zip-up sweatshirt, and plain shoes or trainers. This ensures everyone looks smart and tidy, feels comfortable, and is ready to tackle anything the day throws at them. Our Year 12 and 13 students can either wear their own clothes during the college day or items of uniform. For sports, students wear our bespoke college kit.

  • How do you support student wellbeing?

Student health, happiness, and wellbeing are our priority. We know how important it is to help our young people settle into college life, both socially and academically. That’s why the education we offer is underpinned by an outstanding pastoral system, which nurtures personal growth and provides the 24/7 care our students need to thrive.

Throughout your time here, you’ll be supported by a team of experts, including your Strategy Tutor, our Boarding House Team, and Counsellor. Our OICB ROCKS ‘five ways to wellbeing’ programme promotes positive emotional and physical health, too. You can also access bespoke support in our dedicated wellbeing centre.

  • What should I do if I feel unwell?

Wherever you are on campus, regardless of the time, day or night, our staff are here for you. If you feel unwell during the school day, please speak to one of your teachers. In the evening or overnight, please tell our Boarding House Team. We have a dedicated medical centre and nurse onsite. We’re also just minutes away from local doctor’s surgeries and hospitals.

  • Do I need spending money during the week?

It’s always useful to have a bit of spending money, particularly if you want to grab a hot drink or have a catch-up with friends in our Pioneers Café.

  • Boarding: What meals will I eat?

Our boarders enjoy a freshly prepared breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day, which they eat together in the college’s communal dining room. Our menu has been carefully crafted with wellbeing and physical health in mind, taking inspiration from different cuisines, and giving students a real home from home experience. This includes a creative lunch menu, which includes two main choices, as well as a street food-style option, sides, and dessert.

  • Boarding: Will I share a room?

Yes, most of our boarders share a room with another student. We do have some single bedrooms at Turing House, but these are limited.

  • Boarding: What happens if I don’t get on with my roommate?

We carefully match our students – based around shared interests and courses – to ensure everyone feels comfortable. If at any stage you’re unhappy, however, please let us know. Just speak to your Boarding House Parent or Strategy Tutor.

  • Boarding: Do I have to leave the college over the holidays?

Our boarding fees cover your accommodation during term time (including weekends) and enrichment weeks. Both our houses are closed during the winter (Christmas), spring (Easter), and summer holidays.
